What size cake do I need?

Half kilo or one kilo? How many slices you actually get, how Indian party cutting differs, and the rule of thumb that has never let us down.

Published by The Batter Stories, Mansarovar, Jaipur

This is the single most common question we get, usually at 9 pm the night before a birthday. The short answer: a 500g cake serves four to six people, and a 1kg cake serves eight to ten. The longer answer is that it depends entirely on how the cake is being cut, and Indian parties cut cake differently from the way the textbooks assume.

The numbers, plainly

Cake weightParty slicesDessert slicesTypical use
350g (bento)2–31–2One person, or a couple
500g6–84–6Small family birthday
1kg12–148–10Standard birthday party
1.5kg18–2212–15Large family gathering
2kg25–3016–20Office party, reception

The two columns matter. A 'party slice' is the thin wedge that gets passed around after the candles, often on a tissue, often eaten standing. A 'dessert slice' is what you serve seated, on a plate, with a fork. Most Indian birthdays are the first kind — which is why a 1kg cake routinely feeds fifteen people without anyone feeling short-changed.

The rule of thumb we actually use

Take the number of people you expect. Divide by twelve. Round up to the nearest half kilo. That is your cake.

Twenty people at a birthday? Twenty divided by twelve is 1.67, round up to 2kg. Eight people at a family dinner? That is 0.67, round up to 1kg. Three colleagues in an office? A bento cake will do, and it will look more thoughtful than a large cake nobody finishes.

When to size up

  • There are children. Children take a slice, eat the icing, and abandon it. Add 20%.
  • It's a chocolate truffle or anything dense. People take smaller slices of rich cake, so it goes further — but they also come back.
  • You want leftovers for the next morning. Everyone says they don't. Everyone does.
  • The cake is the dessert, not an addition to one. If there's no other sweet, size up half a kilo.

When to size down

  • It's a fresh-cream cake in April or May. Cream cakes don't keep well in the heat and leftovers rarely survive the night in a shared fridge.
  • There's a full meal being served first. Post-dinner slices are noticeably thinner.
  • It's an office celebration where half the floor is on a diet, on a call, or both.

A note on tiers

Two-tier cakes look larger than they weigh. A two-tier cake with a 1kg base and a 500g top is 1.5kg of cake — it serves what 1.5kg serves, regardless of how impressive the photograph is. If you need the height and the servings, we build up the base rather than adding a tier.
